Structure and algorithms for (cap, even hole)-free graphs

چکیده
A graph is even-hole-free if it has no induced even cycles of length 4 or more. A cap is a cycle of length at least 5 with exactly one chord and that chord creates a triangle with the cycle. In this paper, we consider (cap, even hole)-free graphs, and more generally, (cap, 4-hole)-free odd-signable graphs. We give an explicit construction of these graphs. We prove that every such graph G has a vertex of degree at most 3 2 ω(G)− 1, and hence χ(G) ≤ 3 2 ω(G), where ω(G) denotes the size of a largest clique in G and χ(G) denotes the chromatic number of G. We give an O(nm) algorithm for q-coloring these graphs for fixed q and an O(nm) algorithm for maximum weight stable set. We also give a polynomial-time algorithm for minimum coloring. Our algorithms are based on our results that triangle-free odd-signable graphs have treewidth at most 5 and thus have clique-width at most 48, and that (cap, 4-hole)-free odd-signable graphs G without clique cutsets have treewidth at most 6ω(G) − 1 and clique-width at most 48.

Even and odd holes in cap-free graphs
It is an old problem in graph theory to test whether a graph contains a chordless cycle of length greater than three (hole) with a specific parity (even, odd). Studying the structure of graphs without odd holes has obvious implications for Berge’s strong perfect graph conjecture that states that a graph G is perfect if and only if neither G nor its complement contain an odd hole. متن کاملA note on coloring (even-hole, cap)-free graphs
A hole is a chordless cycle of length at least four. A hole is even (resp. odd) if it contains an even (resp. odd) number of vertices. A cap is a graph induced by a hole with an additional vertex that is adjacent to exactly two adjacent vertices on the hole. In this note, we use a decomposition theorem by Conforti et al. (1999) to show that if a graph G does not contain any even hole or cap as ...
متن کاملOn the structure of (pan, even hole)-free graphs
A hole is a chordless cycle with at least four vertices. A pan is a graph which consists of a hole and a single vertex with precisely one neighbor on the hole. An even hole is a hole with an even number of vertices. We prove that a (pan, even hole)-free graph can be decomposed by clique cutsets into essentially unit circular-arc graphs. This structure theorem is the basis of our O(nm)-time cert...
متن کاملStable sets and graphs with no even holes
We develop decomposition/composition tools for efficiently solving maximum weight stable sets problems as well as for describing them as polynomially sized linear programs (using “compact systems”). Some of these are well-known but need some extra work to yield polynomial “decomposition schemes”. We apply the tools to graphs with no even hole and no cap. A hole is a chordless cycle of length gr...
متن کاملDecomposition of even-hole-free graphs with star cutsets and 2-joins
In this paper we consider the class of simple graphs defined by excluding, as inducedsubgraphs, even holes (i.e. chordless cycles of even length). These graphs are known aseven-hole-free graphs. We prove a decomposition theorem for even-hole-free graphs, thatuses star cutsets and 2-joins. This is a significant strengthening of the only other pre-viously known decomposition of ev...
